Even for high-class teevee gigs in foreign countries, Chuck pulled his usual “You hire the band; I’m sure they’ll be fine” bullshit. Although maybe he brought the drummer because I don’t think they had black people in Belgium in 1965.

I bet Chuck insisted on being paid in American dollars.
One of my favourites. Spirited rhythm work there. I also like how the MC runs off set like he’s got to have a Toilet Sit.
My guess is that most of the black people in Brussels in ’65 were Congolese. Probably some excellent drummers, maybe a few used to using a kit. But the dude could’ve been an airman from a base in Germany for all I know.
One of the best moments ever captured on film: Chuck and Keith almost coming to blows over how to play a proper bend (guitar lick)in Hail Hail rock and roll. Chuck was an ornery, stubborn MF.
Chuck put the feelers out at the 11th floor Ashram Rochedale College (aka The Senator David A. Croll Apts.)

This is Rocky-roll

I’ve lived in St Louis 48 years. Through the 2000s, Chuck played a little club called Blueberry Hill every month. Every month, I thought, oh, I’ll catch it next month. And I never did. One of my great regrets.

When Chuck sings “Bypass Rockingham” it has a much different meaning than when Bob sings it.
But I bet you saw Jake’s Leg there didn’t you?
Ha! I’ve seen Jake’s Leg many places, but not there. Pageant/Delmar Hall just down the street, sure.
Saw Chuck around 90 at a club in LA suburbs. Full Chuck experience. Local pickup band. Extremely short set. Was horrific. Extremely glad I went.
‘Trane was there, then, too . . .
