Mott also covered Darkness, Darkness by The Youngbloods, which Deadheads will recall as “that song the Dead couldn’t be bothered to learn in its entirety.”

Diabetics needs insulin, and I need my Mott The Hoople records. Simple as that.
All the changes they will take their time
In the morning dust they’ll begin to rise
Halfway to a borderline
Well I can see the end
For the very first timeWell I know I lost just a little bit on the journey
When my mind’s been split by little things that didn’t fit on the way
Oh I know I lost just a little bit on the journey
Cause I’m trying so hard to get going
Corry of the indispensable Lost Live Dead reminds us of an early Mott album cut, here performed on the equally indispensable Beat Club

Always A Dead Connection: All The Way To Austin Edition
Written by Doug Sahm!
It seems like the rich dudes live in the sun
And if Eton be a democracy – well I’m gonna get me some
Who ya got?
In favor of Mott: Rocks pretty damn good, and Ian Hunter is suitably snotty.
In favor of Cowboy Junkies: Sometimes, y’don’t wanna rock and y’just wanna find that confounded bridge.
WHO YA GOT?
Mott the Hoople does have one more Dead connection, although it should be noted that Mott actually learned the whole song instead of just stealing the riff.
(That is not Ian Hunter singing; it is guitarist Mick Ralphs, who left the band shortly after this album to form Bad Company. There will be no Thought on the Bad Company, even if you pay me.)
That is it.
The past happened so very long ago.
And now we are so old.
You know your little obsessions bore everyone, right?
Fuck ’em.
Good attitude.
