Musings on the Most Ridiculous Band I Can't Stop Listening To
This the last show Prince ever played, and it’s at a familiar setting for brilliance: the Fabulous Fox in Atlanta. Just the man and his songs and a piano and no idea how the rest of his April was going to turn out. It’s an AUD, but it’s clear and forceful, if a bit bottom-endish.
My advice is usually to listen to ’73, but not tonight.
Prince’s lawyers must be mourning; watch Prince play his (purple) acoustic and run through a mini-medley of hits, including Cream, I Could Never Take the Place of your Man, and a tiny bit of Proud Mary.
Watch it quick: it ain’t gonna be up for long.

There’s not much of the Purple One on the innertubes (it’s too early to start in on the man’s quirks), but when other people owned the copyright, there wasn’t much his legal team could do.
Prince didn’t need special guests or special effects, just a sheet and some fans; it did help that Mother Nature was doing the production design that evening.
(Dead-related thought: the bit when Prince starts the solo is just like when Garcia starts the Franklin’s solo at Lindley Meadows; they are also similar in that they both scare the shit out of me every time I hear them.)
There’s also a mini-documentary from NFL Films about the show (2007 in Miami; Colts beat the Bears 29-17) which features more of Prince’s performance, plus some middle-aged white guy Rock Nerds pontificating about it. Watch it here:

I won’t pretend to have any insight into Prince’s mind, but I can tell you this with absolute certainty: the phrase “show these motherfuckers how it’s done” flowed mightily through Prince’s stream of consciousness before he took the stage this night.
Actually, he probably thought that before he took every stage.
And make no mistake about it: Prince did not go on the stage. He took the stage.
