The important difference between the Grateful Dead and Phish (and every other jam band) is this: the Dead didn’t grow up listening to the Dead. Everything else is just style.

The Phish are real good players. The Grateful Dead are cosmic messengers.
I think the biggest difference is that the grateful dead had garcia/hunter weir/Barlow lesh/crazy guy from Oregon writing their songs. No other jam band has a catalog of songs so diverse and beautiful occurring between the jams and nonsense. Also, what you said.
actually, i think they DID grow up listening to the dead. just from the stage instead of the audience.
