Musings on the Most Ridiculous Band I Can't Stop Listening To

Sole Power

Always remember how lucky (and privileged) Deadheads are: This album is literally the only extant recording of James Brown with the original JB band, the one with Bootsy and Catfish Collins. This is it, man.

Meanwhile, every goof-off session at Club Front is available from four different sources.

one of the Club Front highlights: the band, minus Mickey, all sitting around after recording on one occasion talking about Mickey and all the shit he’s going to bring in just to play a little bit on a couple of tracks. i think Phil at one point calls it Mickeys “Apocalypse Now” set up. the reference being Mickey worked with Francis F.C., recording a few tracks for the movie, most of which ended up being scrapped. i think the story goes Mickey behaved exactly as one would expect him to in this situation and brought in every different drum or variation thereof that man has ever created, and even invented a few new ones for the hell of it for the film recording sessions. i think the Beam was born of these sessions, but i digress.

and the JBs were one of the tightest bands in history. they had to be, those missed notes ended up costing them! and they had to pay the rent and the bills too!
