Musings on the Most Ridiculous Band I Can't Stop Listening To

Stevland

That’s Stevie Wonder’s real first name. Stevland. Like he comes from the Land of Steves or something. O, what a miracle this world can be.

If you have nothing to say, then why do you type?

No one ever asked Chuck Klosterman that.

THEY DID. CONSTANTLY.

Do you recommend Klosterman? And if so, where to start?

I kinda liked his book about Hair Metal, but not much else.

I like him a lot. Unironically. “Fargo Rock City” and “Killing Yourself to Live” are good intros to his long form stuff, and “Sex, Drugs and Cocoa Puffs” is a good essay collection. His novel “Downtown Owl” is also really, really good. I think his weaker books are the ethics/futurism ones he did when he was writing a column as “The Ethecist” for the New York Times. But I think the New York Times ruins everything it touches, so you might need to consider my judgment flawed on that front.

The key protagonist in the brilliant scientifictional book “Semiosis” and sequel is named Stevland. The author (Sue Burke) won me over with that little bit of cultural sommat before I knew much else about her and her books. But very, very good they were.
