this is where me and totd follow separate paths. i have been youtubing elizabeth cotton the past couple days. fingerpickers will understand. jerry did. but, to each his own.
God, I remember watching that, rapt, at my girlfriend’s house on VHS when it was commercially released at the zenith of his popularity . . . and that was a MOMENT there, that was. Plentiful wows. Copious dangs. Holy Molies raining down. I sure loved it in its time, but it’s unquestionable genius aside, I must say that I am glad that synths (BREEEEENT!!) and syndrums (BOOM POK!) do not often do THAT anymore, since any 20-second sample of the concert could readily be the best answer to the question “What did 1985 sound like?”

A friend and I were walking around after a Marshall Crenshaw show at First Avenue in the late ’80s, maybe a block away from the venue. We ducked in a late night magazine shop, just-because, and almost (physically) ran into Jerome exiting the store.
