Reasons For Billy’s Absence

  • Didn’t wanna.
  • Underestimated an edible.
  • Perfectly estimated an edible, but ate nine of them.
  • Just can’t look at any dude feet right now.
  • Halfway through a Settlers of Cataan game and needs to manage his lumber.
  • Halfway through a divorcĂ©e from Aurora and needs to manage his lumber.
  • Wandering around the lot handing out rolling papers and screaming, “CAN YOU DIG IT?” at Deadheads.
  • Nap time.
  • They didn’t have a jersey with the number 69 on it, so Billy refused to participate.
  • Murdering Benjy for old time’s sake.

For A Loose Definition Of “Drum”

Five minutes into the honky-horn symphony, Billy looked backstage and noticed a roadie who had clearly been beaten to death with honky-horns. Then, he looked down and noticed Mickey’s baseball gloves and all of a sudden Billy knew he’d been set up.

OR

The geese came suddenly and with anger. Billy accepted his feathery death; he was laughing as the birds ate his eyes.

OR

I guarantee these things come with a lecture about how “everything’s a drum, man.”

OR

Holy shit: Mickey is not wearing a Dead shirt. AND he doesn’t have his Stealie earpiece in. Mickey is momentarily bereft of Dead bullshit; he’s had nightmares about this for years.

OR

“Billy?”

“Yeah Mick?”

“They’re like boobies.”

“They totally are.”

OR

Shortly after this picture was taken, the rest of the band joined the Rhythm Devils for Drums, except for Bobby, who took one look and started making calls about the next Ratdog tour.

The Devils And Mike Gordon

Hey, look at you guys. Both your bands have shows tonight.

“Ass!”

Hey, Billy.

“Drums!”

Mick.

“Do you enjoy art photography?”

Not the way you do it, Mike.

“Who you watching illegally?”

One of you.

“Who?”

…

…

…

The guys who jam, with the guitar player who solos.

“Are you watching Phish, you traitorous little fuck?”

“Drums?”

“YAAAAAAAY!”

Hallways And Means

I don’t think those are legally pants. Like, if they were imported and needed to be classified for tariff? They would be taxed at the rate for “loose cloth” rather than for “trousers.” They’re definitely from Creepy Ernie’s because they have three or four inseams, and there’s nothing Ern likes more than measuring an inseam.

Anyway, there’s a show tonight, because it is summer and we are Americans, and so the Grateful Dead (Or What’s Left Of ‘Em) is playing somewhere. They’re at Folsom Field* in Boulder, CO, tonight and the show’s being webcasted. Buy it here, or you can listen on SiriusXM Channel 23, or you could steal the pirate feed like a scurvy dog.

The show starts at 6:30 pm Mountain Time, which means I do not know when it starts.

Why are time zones so confusing to you?

Why aren’t they confusing to everyone else?

Terrible answer.

*These will be the first rock shows in 15 years since Dave Matthews blew past the strict curfew and the university stopped booking concerts, once again proving that Dave Matthews ruins everything.

Dead & Dobro

Here’s a better shot of Bobby’s new electric dobro. For those of you who don’t know, a dobro is like a guitar.

Also, Mickey is wearing that hat because they are playing Casey Jones and Mickey has decided to expand his repertoire of annoying hat-wearing to the rest of the set list. So far, Mickey has worn:

  • One of those schmucky personal umbrellas. (Cold Rain and Snow.)
  • Green visor dealie like am old-timey card shark. (Deal.)
  • Giant foam cowboy hat. (Like, nine songs.)
  • Miner’s helmet with light that he kept shining in Jeff Chimenti’s eyes. (Cumberland Blues.)
  • Scary goblin mask for no reason. (Johnny B. Goode.)

Breaking, Waves

“I’m gonna stick my dobro up your ass if you don’t take that stupid thing off.”

“Contract says I can wear it.”

“Just stand there and wave your mallets around, jackass.”

“Ah, wear your culottes, Weir.”

“You don’t like Lost Sailor, then write your own song and we’ll play that.”

“I wrote a song. I invented rap music.”

“Don’t you start with that shit again.”

…

“What the fuck is in your ears, Mick?”

“What the fuck are on your feet, Bob?”

“That’s it. Andrew!”

…

“Do you mean me, Bobby?”

“Andrew Perry.”

“No.”

“Apple Peach.”

“Uh-uh.”

“Ally Pally.”

“That’s a place, Bob. It’s Aaron Paul.”

“Whatever. You’re a criminal person. Come hit Mickey for me.”

“I am an actor, Bobby. Not a criminal.”

“There’s a difference?”

Choogle Finds A Way

When the last pterodactyl had been felled, and the blood cleaned up, people began to ask questions; first among them was “Why was the Grateful Dead allowed to have dinosaurs?” In the Dead’s defense, no one had told them they couldn’t.

Mickey had bought a piece of hash the size of a well-fed child, and discovered an ancient mosquito within its crumbly innards. He brought the mosquito (and a sizable chunk of the hash) to Front Street for a more scientific investigation; Phil, luckily, was already wearing a lab coat. Unluckily, he was wearing nothing else, but he wouldn’t let Mickey use the microscope or any of the other doohickeys without being included.

They began by thin-slicing the mosquito, then carefully affixing it to slides. Stains were added to some, and others were treated with various chemicals. Phil made notes for five minutes and then started drawing mean cartoons of Mickey with a drum kit up his ass. After the slides had all been prepared, they examined each specimen.

“You know what you’re looking at?”

“They’re pretty.”

So they asked the Wall of Sound to figure it out and went out for tacos.

ISLA INVIERNA – ONE YEAR LATER, BUT ALSO SIMULTANEOUSLY

“Jerassic Park?”

“Well, yeah. See: your name’s ‘Jerry.’ So it’s like–”

“It wasn’t that I didn’t get it, Weir.”

“–combining that with…okay, yeah, sure. It’s a great name. Irving Azoff thought it up.”

“I managed to avoid that guy my whole life, and you do this to me? Nice work, pal. The shame, the shame.”

“It’s a good name, Jer. Lends itself to merch. The shirt where you have tiny little T-Rex arms and you can’t reach your guitar and you look so sad? Big seller.”

“Right, man.”

“Phil’s head on a brontosaurus.”

“Yeah, I liked that. Yoinked one.”

“My favorite’s where they replaced the turtles on the porch with ankylosaurs.”

“That porch wouldn’t be around much longer.”

“Lotta collateral damage involved with having an ankylosaur dance your porch, yeah. Phil had one on his bocce courts. No good for anyone.”

…

“Billy punched a dinosaur in the dick yet?”

“Like, the second the first one was made.”

“He’s a go-getter.”

We Were Randos Once, And Young

“I heard there was a Rando War going on.”

I really hoped this would have blown over by now.

“I got one, too!”

Mickey, that’s not a rando. That’s Carlos Santana.

…

“Yup, yeah. I see it now.”

Please don’t say–

“Thought it was one of Phil’s busboys.”

–anything racist. Like that.

“Gimme a sec. I got randos coming out of my ass.”

Ew.

mickey george lucas

“Rando!”

The opposite.

“Not a rando?”

I thought you were deaf. Are you blind, too?

…

“This is not a rando.”

No.

“It’s Steven Spielberg.”

Close enough.

“I can do better.”

But you don’t have to.

“Found one!”

jerry mickey smiling

That’s Garcia.

“Dammit.”

You’re awful at this game.

“Sure, but look at all the famous people I know.”

Yeah, okay.
