Musings on the Most Ridiculous Band I Can't Stop Listening To

All The Way From Tamalpais

Hey, Bobby. Whatcha doing?

“I’m going hog-wild. Halfway to banging my head.”

Oh, don’t do that.

“And, uh, I might jump at the end of the song. That’s a primo Rock Star move. You know how that one goes.”

I do.

“Requires a buy-in from your drummer. Everyone’s gotta be onboard with the end-of-song jump. Otherwise, you look like…what’s that word your people love?”

Schmuck.

“There ya go. Y’look like a schmuck. First rule of Rock n’ Roll: Don’t look like a schmuck. No, wait. The first rule is: Always assume she’s got the Clap. Second rule is the schmuck thing. Another good Rock Rule is not to leave your female band members alone with the promoter. Especially if you’re in Buffalo.”

These are all good rules, Bobby.

“Without them, we are merely animals.”

True.

“Question.”

I have absolutely no idea who the people you’re playing with are.”

“All right, then.”

I’ve seen Bobby playing this Strat – looks an awful lot like the sunburst Strat Jerry played at Veneta. Anyone know if it’s that same instrument?

    Hey RI Tom,

That Stratocaster is almost certainly not the guitar from Veneta, assuming you mean the 1972 show in Veneta that became the film Sunshine Daydream. The sunburst pattern on Jerry’s starts off essentially black and fades to a natural coat while Bobby’s starts off more like a very dark brown and fades to a lighter more caramel colored brown. I thought perhaps that could be due to the nearly half a century between now and the show in 1972. However if you pay close attention to the headstock of Bobby’s guitar you can see that it has the telltale sleek shape of a modern Stratocaster (this update on the traditional small headstock from the original pre-1965 era strat headstock wasn’t released until 1987 and hasn’t changed much since) whereas Jerry’s guitar has the classic post 65 up to 1980 era giant headstock. It’s possible Bobby could have switched out the neck for a modern neck but I seriously doubt that he would start chopping up a piece of Garcia’s history when he has access to almost any other guitar he wants. After looking closer at both Jerry’s and Bobby’s strats it’s clear that they have quite different finishes; Bobby’s isn’t even actually a traditional sunburst it just appears as if it were due to the lighting of the picture it’s one continuous color with thicker/darker finish around the edges. I know TOTD has banned me from commenting because I don’t pay him money to look at his funny posts and I don’t really play too well with others but hopefully this crucial piece of historical info where I’m being super serious for my close new friend, Tom, gets through the censors this time
