Musings on the Most Ridiculous Band I Can't Stop Listening To

An Easy Question, If You Think About It

The band is the Sleigh Bells, and the song is called Rill Rill. Apple used it in a commercial.

It is based, and heavily so, on a sample from this…

…which is Can You Get To That from Funkadelic’s 1971 album Maggot Brain.

We now play a game. Answer this question in the Comment Section: How much money did the writers of Can You Get To That make from the success of Rill Rill?

most likely not a goddamned cent but mavis staples plays it all the time and put it on an album so at least some royalties should flow from that.

I haven’t seen Funkentelechy get much love during ToPF – Wizard of Finance might be just as good a love song.

Even Dow Jones would find it hard to believe…

Ya hear that P-Funk blended harmony shit? That’s really fucking hard to do.

George Clinton & Ernie Harris got a half writer’s share on the Sleigh Bells song, so if the publishing fees for the commercial & song were paid properly, George WOULD have gotten something, but he sold his publishing like 3 times to 3 different drug dealers.

George actually talks about that “sample” (which is more like a “lift”) in his autobiography.

My recollection is that there was no cash money involved . . .

If you click PLAY on those two at just the right times, they will synch up nicely.

I didn’t realize George spent so much time smoking the crack. :-/
