Musings on the Most Ridiculous Band I Can't Stop Listening To

Reccomendations

READ THIS BOOK You must. If you’ve been coming around here for any length of time, then it’s for you. The Trick flames out! KISS destroys! Aerosmith is, you know, fine for what they were! Starz literally chokes their powerful manager in public and then wonders why their career tanked! And constant dickishness from Gene and Paul! It’s everything you want in a book. Go, read, do.

WATCH THIS SHOW You should! Plebs is perhaps the purest sitcom I’ve ever seen. It has no influences aside from other sitcoms: Nothing–absolutely zilch–is original; everything is stolen from previous, better, shows. The premise is The In-Betweeners set in Ancient Rome. Guy in the left is the Oversexed Doofus; the one in the middle is the Uptight Plot Driver; on the right is Baldrick. They have a Sleazy Landlord and a Slutty Boss, and there are many Guest Stars. One can, with no effort, predict the rest of the story (and even individual jokes) within the first seconds of the program beginning.

I love this show. Just what I needed right now.

EAT THIS SOUP Fancy folks’ll scoff, but fuck ’em. Never be ashamed of being common. Takeout wonton soup from the dodgy Chinese place is one of life’s glories. Eat it in your car while REO Speedwagon cranks. Wonton’ll help you roll with the changes.

LOOK AT THIS PICTURE One of my favorite categories of pictures of KISS is “KISS where they’re not supposed to be.” This was 4/24/74, and they didn’t have the money for the high-quality costumes just yet, but still: Check the fit. John Mayer wishes he had a fit like that.

Yay! I am on a book-inspired KISS and Trick jag here. So perfectly stoopit and so perfectly perfect. I can’t get that excited about Aerosmith, alas. And I heard the first Starz album when it came out but nothing since. Need to correct that, I think.

I, too, am delving deeply into the KISSalogue. And I loved loved loved that book. One of the best Rock Books in the past decade.

(I’d post a pic of my Trick, KISS, and ‘Smith-bloated iTunes player, but I can’t figure out how to attach pics in the Comment Section. Ah, well. I’ve only had the site for 8 years. Can’t be expected to learn all the details so quickly.)

Heh . . . my iTunes Family iPod Playlist would be similarly bloated . . . my wife asked me last night “Did someone from KISS die? Is that why we’re on non-stop KISS listening this week?” Fair question, to her credit . . . she had to request that I tone down the Van Halen content a couple of weeks ago, since I’d been in full-bore mourn/listen mode since Ed flew away . . .

Oh, P.S. I’d say that “Creatures of the Night” and “Animalize” are the two “Huh, this is much better than I remember it being!” discs from the post-“Dynasty” catalog that I am headbanging to and enjoying the most . . .

Ooh, I cannot agree on Animalize. I was astonished by the crapitude.

Creatures is pretty good, and so is Lick It Up. It was a dark period (except for the neon leggings Paul wore).

“Animalize” reminded me most of Paul’s solo album . . . which, I guess, makes sense as I think Gene was in Hollywood mode at that point and the other two were, uhhhhh, the other two (whoever they were at that point). It works for me, though, for reasons likely inexplicable!!

Gene’s extracurricular activities in the 80’s remind me a little of Mick Jagger’s similar nonsense. Both men were seemingly desperate to get the hell out of their bands.

I went on a wonton kick a few years ago. A place near my office had great wonton soup. One day, I went well after the lunch rush to grab a ‘bowl’. The guy said “Give me 5 minutes to make some” and proceeded to pull out a nasty container of powdered chicken soup mix and spooned too bunch into a pot, brought it to a boil and pulled some wontons out of the freezer and tossed them in. Likely psychosomatic but all that MSG allowed me to see through walls later that afternoon.
