From a gentile who’s studied it: this really is how it starts. Right down to beginning to draw the support of various Establishment eminences who imagine that they can work him, if he happens to get into power.
As an observer- I’m forced to watch, we’re all forced to watch at this point- I’m hoping for a slightly more humorous outcome, along the lines of viewing the unfolding of a 419 scam.
