Musings on the Most Ridiculous Band I Can't Stop Listening To

Which Way Did He Go, Which Way Did He Go?

It’s like a Rando sandwich.

Nicely done. Hey, good work on closing down for that Day Without Immigrants thing.

“Gotta do what’s right.”

Yes, you do.

“Plus, Mondays are always slow. Didn’t really affect the month’s numbers.”

You should probably leave the second thing out when you talk about it.

“It’s a business, jackass.”

True. What did the busboys do with their day off?

“Day off? The fuck you mean? Just because the restaurant was closed doesn’t mean they had the day off.”

You made the immigrants work on the Day Without Immigrants?

“I didn’t make them work.”

“I let them work.”

  1. I learned that Bruce Hampton died when I saw a CNN headline that read “Grandfather of Jam Rock Collapses Onstage, Dies.”

I assumed I was about to read that Lesh had kicked it. Apparently he’s still alive.

It’s a weird headline. Of course Phil has contributed to jams heard by a few more (thousands of) people than Colonel Bruce. But (a) sad another musician is gone, and (b) not expecting Mr. Lesh to ever get called “grandfather of” anything except his grandchildren.

      • Funny thing: The night Hampton died, you posted a thing titled “Sittin’ on Top (Hat) of the World.” That’s one of my favourite tunes, and I associate it with Hampton because he was the first guy I ever heard play it, so I imagined a Jerry/Hampton dialogue was being set up.

Also, holy shit, that bass player at that bar with that band with the weird name was Brother Oteil. I JUST fucking made that connection.

  2. Good Lord, look at Phil’s “ET phone home” fingers . . .

  3. Just dropping this here in case someone is interested.. a mix we recently finished of Garcia’s various musical adventures in the month of November 1973:
